8/6/09 COBRAS President E-Mail COBRAS Mid-Summer President Newsletter Man the summer is flying by isn’t it? I hope you are all enjoying your bikes and the great weather. I wanted to remind you about the upcoming American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure, which gives you points for the COBRAS Championship Series and COBRAS will reimburse your entry fee of $25 if you paid one. After the ride on August 22nd I will let Mike Persoff know who all attended and he will send you a check. This is a great social event, plus a wonderful ride that helps a worth cause through our fundraising efforts, so participate if you have the time. The COBRAS Board held a Board Meeting mid-July and will institute a few changes at the end of the year. Increasing costs brought on by an ever-growing membership we have decided to increase the annual dues to $50. The dues had been $45 with the club supplementing the dues by $5. There will also be a 5% surcharge added to all clothing items. After looking around at the dues of other clubs, we are still a huge bargain for those wanting to join a racing club. The Minutes of that Board Meeting as recorded by Vicki Norman Secretary are on the COBRAS website. Both the Bear Creek Park TT’s and Deer Creek Canyon Hill Climb are looming on the horizon for September, so if you need to add ideas to your training regime don’t forget you can call Christie Hanson our coach for tips; her number is (303) 944-0014. Alan Boisvert says he has all of the volunteer slots filled so we are ready to go. Also in September we will set the date for the Annual Party slated for a November date TBA, and if you wish to be on a Board position or committee please let us know so we can add you to the list of potential candidates for elections in November. As President–elect & COBRAS Championship Series Planning and Scheduling co-chair Dave Mitchell mentioned in his recent email, we are in the midst of crit season, give one a chance, you might find out you really like them. We are a development club and wish to help you add new events and skills to your quiver, contact Christie for tips on this too. Enjoy the rest of the summer and make it to one of the Saturday morning training rides if you can…they're fun! Thanks, Keith Renninson President

2009 Fund Raiser Hi fellow members, Kumi Horiuchi is doing it again -- stair climbing that is. As you remember, the last climb was the Empire State Bldg. - Well now it's to the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower ( formerly the Sears Tower ) in Chicago; 103 flights to the Sky Deck, a total of 2109 steps. Look it up on the web at www.skyrisechicago.org . This 72 yr. old 97 lb. gal needs our help with registration $50.00 and fund raising for Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago(RIC) $100.00 minimum. Kumi's goal is $1000.00. Anyone who can, would you please, help Kumi with her expenses? Don't know exactly when she'll need to have your donations, only that it will be before Nov. 1. You can contact Kumi at 303-659-5907 or snail mail a donation to RIC via Kumi Horiuchi, 735 S Eighth Ave, Brighton, CO . Thanks, Mark Hopkins
Nov 4, 2009: E-mail from Tom Foss It appears that Jefferson County Commissioners have given up their attempt to seek legislation to allow them to restrict bicycle access to county roads. This article appeared in today’s(11/4/2009) Columbine Courier. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this effort and especially to Dan and all at Bicycle Colorado who led the charge. FYI, Kathy Hartman told Bike Jeffco that she received more emails on this topic than anything else since she became a County Commissioner. Bike Jeffco is already working with Canyon residents to create a solution acceptable to everyone. We will have more details about this at next Tuesday’s (11/10/2009) meeting when our special guest coincidentally will be County Commissioner Kevin McCasky. Comm. McCasky is a big proponent of “Buckling the Beltway”, that is completing the beltway around Denver through Golden. Don’t miss it. This will be an opportunity to ask him questions about any bicycle and transportation related matter. If for some reason you can’t make the meeting, please send me your questions and I will present them. At that meeting, we will also vote on the new Bike Jeffco mission/goals/vision statement that members hammered out at last night’s meeting. Thanks to all who worked on this document over the last few weeks.
